EMPLOYMENT EXPERIENCE.
Besides experimenting with creating my own business over the last few years, I have the following employment history.
Senior Desktop Support Specialist, Topica [www.topica.com] (10/00 to 1/01): I eliminated a huge support backlog while solving new desktop and network issues cheerfully and with alacrity. I lead a small support team and delegated tasks while training less-experienced team members. I made purchasing choices and NT network policy decisions. I also helped wire a new wing of the office.
Project Manager, Pragmactive Custom Solutions [www.pragmactive.com] (2/00 to 7/00): I directed the design and first stages of implementation of an LDAP- aware web contact management suite. I specified program requirements and due dates while performing in tech support and web design roles as needed.
Webmaster, Wadsworth Publishing (a division of International Thomson Publishing Corp.) [www.wadsworth.com] (8/99 to 10/99): I held a temporary position through a recruiter for two months. I quickly adjusted to their unique web QA-request & change process policies without any real training or briefing and made better progress than expected on a very long backlog of ignored requests. I also made important recommendations during their delicate server migration.
Webmaster, peermusic and pressure records [www.peermusic.com] and [www.digitalpressure.com] (1/98 to 9/00): My partner and I updated and revamped peermusic.com and generated digitalpressure.com from scratch with music samples for peermusic (Novato, CA), the oldest existing indie label.
Lead Programmer and Consultant, Carroll Creative, Inc. [www.carrollcreative.com] (1/97 to 1/98): In addition to designing relational contact manager software to contract specs and implementing most of this design in VB5 with heavy use of SQL and an Access database, I assisted in the design and production of many web sites and made sure that they were fit for Internet business use. I also acted as tech support for many web and multimedia clients.
System and Network Administrator, California Financial Credit Association (8/92 to 8/96): I assisted in the admin and integration of the dual-platform information systems used by a busy collection agency. I wrote complex SQL statements and function libraries to automate everyday tasks. I maintained their UNIX-based PICK collection database and authored programs to fill the needs of management and employees. I helped design and implement daily back- back-ups of all collection data. I was available 24/7/365 for emergencies and worked beyond the call to ensure that business as usual was not interrupted.
Personal Technical Consultant, John Aaroe and Associates Realtors [Carole Gillie] (4/96 to 3/97): I made hardware and software recommendations and performed PC upgrades and troubleshooting for Carole and her co-workers, the top-producing agents at John Aaroe. I networked her home and office via phone. I worked at the realtors' homes and offices and trained them in computer and Internet use to insure their information processing satisfaction.
PC Systems and Network Technician, ListingLink Homes and Open Houses [http://www.listinglink.com] (11/95 to 6/96): I worked half-time and as needed to maintain the smooth operation of ListingLink's 40+ desktops and notebooks, and the Novell and NT network that linked them. I answered questions and worked with management to address the issues of the fast-growing company. I helped create new network topologies and install and configure new machines to connect to in-house real-estate databases and Internet via the company's T1 and personal dial-up connections. I instituted a comprehensive anti-virus solution. I also acted as substitute MIS Director and was responsible for the collection and organization of data from multiple listing services and was commended for speed and completeness. I reduced internal and external complaints by over 10%. ListingLink is now owned by the Los Angeles Times.
PC Systems and Network Technician, You Bet! Inc. [http://www.youbet.com] (1/95 to 10/95): In addition to being responsible for the collection of decision-support information from the Internet and other sources, I ran a 15- station WinNT network. I built and configured new servers and workstations, and kept a virus-free software library. I integrated an existing AppleTalk network into the NT network for complete connectivity. I made software, hardware, and equipment evaluations and purchase decisions. I also reviewed applications and resumes of possible employees and assisted in hiring.
BBS SysOp, Cybersystems Online Inc. (10/95 to 12/95): I reorganized and administered a 2000-user for-profit multiuser bulletin board system that closed due to lack of funds. I answered comments and implemented new features created from a mix of suggestions and my knowledge of online entertainment and user management from past BBS and Internet experience. I made software suggestions to the program author and was licensed to co-develop it. Through my improvements and communication, customer complaints dropped by 75%.
Computer Sales Agent, Paq Industries (8/94 to 11/94): As part of a small team of college students, I sold made-to-order computer systems on commission to other students and businesses. I was responsible for building, testing and supporting the systems that I sold.
Technical Secretary, Minority Health Institute (3/94 to present): I was responsible for handling all of the business computing, data entry and processing needs for a non-profit organization. I dealt directly with the president and founder in a special 24/7 on-call agreement to guarantee that their needs were met. I was responsible for all software and hardware purchasing. I will soon assist them in creating their online presence.
